Argan tree

Argan tree, the botanical name is Argania spinosa, is the plant that produces argan nuts which are engorged with argan oil.

Argan tree is endemic to the region of Sous, in the South of Morocco.

In the past, argan trees only grew in the South of Morocco and nowhere else on the planet, however in recent decades, Israel and Mexico have started growing them and also producing argan oil.

The argan tree grows to about ten meters and can live up to 200 years.

They are beautiful and highly resistant trees that grow in a very desert region of North Africa.

Its flowers are small and only appear in April, its fruits are very thick and bitter, that's why they are so enjoyed by goats.

The inside of the fruits is going to contain nuts which take about a year to mature and be ready, they are protected by a hard shell.

Unfortunately, cultivated areas with argan trees have shrunk dramatically in the last century, and even though argan oil has brought prosperity to many farmers, areas cultivated with argan trees are still in decline because of desertification and excess grazing.
